The film was directed by Arthur Penn, and stars Faye Dunaway as Bonnie Parker, and Warren Beatty as Clyde Barrow. The camera does a clever little dance insuring that Dunaway shows plenty of skin without really revealing anything, as jagged jump cuts slice away whenever her motion within the rame threatens to bring her nudity across the line of acceptability. The medium shot that follows shows the water marks in the ceiling and wall of her low-income frame house, indicating her dire financial straits. When she she flings herself down on her bed, the bars both run diagonally across the screen and cast shadows across her face indicating for us the prison she feels she feels she’s in as she repeate dly strikes the cage surrounding her. Based on how she saw herself in the mirror, she clearly thinks she deserves better. The following close up (when she grabs the bars) and zoom into an extreme close up of her eyes reflects her torment. As the camera holds her face, we can see the resignation in her face as she turns to get dressed for work. Bonnie is trapped in a dead end life. By stressing this aspect of her life, Penn has us initially glimpse Bonnie in the best possible light. This scene also explains Bonnie’s following actions in two ways. First is that she understands exactly how Clyde must have felt in prison when they later meet, establishing an immediate bond between them. The second is that, when Clyde tells her that he cut off two of his toes to get out of a work detail, she believes him for the man of action he portrays himself to be , (â€Å"Boy, did you really do that. †). This compares favorably with her desire to rise above her own dull circumstance and take action within her own life. It’s understandable then when Bonnie rides off in the car stolen by a man who has robbed a grocery store, who she has only known a few minutes (but has connected with emotionally. ) The idea of a decent young woman in a dead end town working a dead end job during the Great Depression escaping with a convicted felon is made even more acceptable by the mise-en-scene and cinematography. The deep focus of the opening scene allows us to see her room humbly decorated with a small, vulgar collection of porcelain figurines and a rag doll, and a few family photographs are tacked on the drab wall. These details allow us to see Bonnie as an ordinary person. Likewise, Clyde is portrayed as a clean cut gentleman with white fedora hat, white shirt, and tie and jacket, and a bright white smile. His jacket, a warm brown earthy brown, softens any inclinations we may have of him as a criminal after Bonnie catches him about to steal her mother’s car. The mise-en-scene on the long tracking shot down an empty Main Street (except for one elderly Negro sitting on a bench in front of the barber shop) in the small, rural, Southwest Texas town allows us to connect the hard times and limited opportunities (boarded up stores) that surround Bonnie and Clyde and then a close-up of Clyde’s face. Clyde’s mouth is dominated by objects, like the Coke bottle and the match, which demonstrate his confidence. Perhaps, a close-up shot is used instead of the standard wide shot is to emphasize this aspect of Clyde’s personality. When Bonnie rubs the tip of the bottle of coke across her lips and flicks her tongue in her mouth as she watches Clyde gulped his and smiles, the shot is closed-up to emphasize Bonnie’s sexual curiousity. In a longer shot, Bonnie both turns aways from Clyde, but then turns back toward him in order to give him another opportunity to prove his violence, Clyde pulled out his gun and clandestinely showing it to her. The wide shot allows this action to play out on screen – both her change in attitude as well as his last effort. The wide shot also manages to obstruct the gun from the audience’s view by not showing it in close-up until later. From this still frame, it’s even difficult to see what the object that he pulls from his pocket is exactly. Then, a quick close-up of Bonnie’s face presents her intrigue at seeing Clyde’s gun. to a close-up of Clyde’s gun as he holds it at his waist and points it in her direction. The Coke bottles are now put away and missing from the last couple close-ups as their relationship moves onto the next stage. The establishing shot of the main street in town introduces the flat, empty, barren country all around them. After Clyde robs the grocery store and during their first escape in the stolen car, the scenes are pretty much rough cuts of Bonnie smothering Clyde with hugs and kisses as they careen down the dusty country road. Like in the scene when Bonnie first realizes that Clyde isn’t much a â€Å"loverboy†, it pours out loads of bullshits about how Clyde, nevertheless, saw something special in Bonnie, which Bonnie buys it, when if you’re realistic enough considering her insecurity and desperation to escape her small town ennui, but the director seems to expect the audience to buy it as well, to see this tale as a Hollywood tragic love story. By only giving one side of the argument, you will not be able to persuade the other position in your essay. You also need a strong thesis. I learned that a thesis is a statement that sums up your argument that will motivate readers to continue reading your paper. You have to make sure you have enough arguments to support your thesis statement in your body paragraphs. The mock debate in class really helped me see the positive and negative outcomes of making English the official language. When both sides started to defend their case, I learned so much that I didn’t have knowledge of before. For instance, going into this debate I thought the students who were in favor of making English an official language would have no arguments to back up their points. To my surprise, they had just as much points as students who were against making English an official language. The worst part about the debate was the all the research we had to do. Although it took a lot of time, it was well worth it. Before the debate, we spent an hour doing research and collecting information. This debate helped all of us as a class become more confident as a speakers. To improve for our next debate, we have to speak in complete sentences and be more polite rather than demanding and overbearing. The feedback I received from my classmates and professor really helped me improve my essay. When I received feedback on my 1st draft from my classmates, I learned that although I had good arguments against English being the official language, I needed more arguments for the other side. When I wrote my first draft I didn’t have a good thesis to back up my arguments. Through the help of my classmates, I was able to think of a good thesis that included my side of the argument and why I was in favor of it . The feedback I received from my professor taught me that if I’m talking about the United States, I cant say America because America includes South and North America. I also learned that you cant use the phrase â€Å"many people† because its not specific to who you’re referring to. This argumentative paper has taught me so much information that I didn’t have knowledge of before. For example, I didn’t know that 85 percent of the world has an official language and that there was over 322 languages spoken in the United states. Before I wrote this paper, I never thought there was so much debate on this issue for many years. Rested? The end of the day for some people can be very relaxing. The days that seem to be the longest, and most stressful, seem to always be the ones that require a good nights sleep. Some statistics show that people spend about one-fifth of there life sleeping. That is a lot of time that we spend on a bed resting. Considering that we are going to spend about 5-10 years sleeping, I would imagine that people want to spend at least half of this time being comfortable. After all, what good is a nights sleep if a person can't enjoy it throughout the whole night? Doctors say that sleeping is your body's way of repairing and replenishing itself. In other words, it is a very serious thing to think about when you lye down on that bed of yours. The amount of rest that a person receives is directly related to the mattress that cradles them throughout the night. When I think of a mattress, there are several things that characterize a good mattress. The first thing is the size of the mattress. I cannot see how the big and tall people of this world, fit on little twin size beds. How can a person be comfortable when his/her feet are hanging off the bed? That is something that I ask myself everyday. Another characteristic of a quality mattress is in the actual construction of it. If a mattress is cheaply constructed and has loose springs as its main foundation, it is probably not going to be very supportive to the body. More often than not, the price of a mattress will reflect the quality of construction and the time it took to carefully construct it. A quality mattress should also be very supportive to the body and especially to the back. Another thing that some people tend to not think about is the age of a mattress. If a mattress is older than five years, it is most likely going to be non-supportive of the back and body. The construction of a mattress consists of springs and coils. In old mattresses, these springs tend to sag after approximately five to seven years. After these springs sag, the mattress begins to show signs of wear, and will not be very supportive any more. Comfort lies in the construction of a mattress. The most important thing that a mattress should have is comfort. If it is not comfortable, you will not receive a very good nights sleep. Since a person spends about a fifth of his/her life sleeping, you should definitely be comfortable while doing it. The mattress that I lay on every night lacks most of these characteristics. My mattress is a full size mattress that has little comfort and little support. I like to describe my mattress as ?the taco bed.? The reason I say this is because when you sit or lay in it, it literally forms around you as if you are the meat in a taco and are about to be eaten. Maybe this is because of the fact that I am a bit heavy, but it shows that the construction of it was cheaply made. This mattress was an additional piece of furniture that was in my apartment and part of the ?furnished? monthly rent. This is most definitely a big reason why it is so cheaply constructed. Apartment complexes that rent ?furnished? apartments are not interested in the comfort of you, they are interested in the money that is to come out of you. So in turn, the company spends little money on the actual furnishings, and that means that you are stuck with ?the taco bed.? The ?taco? that I sleep on definitely show's signs of w ear. It has only been slept on for about eight months. This mattress is probably the cheapest mattress that can be bought in today's industry, and has all the attributes of a poorly constructed mattress. The earliest record of piracy at sea was in the year 69 in the Mediterranean Sea, however piracy is suspected to have dated back to the time where humans started using the sea as their trade routes the exact date is not known. The Medias used to gather and compile to put this report together was mainly found on search engines like Google or yahoo and online encyclopaedias also contributed, minimal information was taken from newspaper articles. The history of piracy, infamous pirates, background of pirates and also modern day pirates are just a few of the points on piracy that will be covered in this report. The act of piracy is mainly carried out for gold or money that the pirates will demand for certain goods that they have taken from a ship or the entire ship itself. The only punishment for pirates in the past was hanging if they were caught however the navy was occasiona lly called in to capture these pirates and in some cases large numbers of pirates were wiped out. The creator of the Jolly Roger was by 18th century pirate Captain Jack Calico Rackham. The bodies of the hanged pirates were sometimes left alone to scare the civilians preventing them from wanting to become pirates to avoid the grisly fate of death by hanging. There are numerous causes for the unusually large number of pirates in Somalia however the same cannot be said for pirates in other parts of the world as the government lacking Somalia can do little to prevent ships from other countries from overfishing and dumping of toxic waste in their waters destroying their marine life. Some companies also reroute their ships to take a longer more expensive routes in order to avoid places like Somalia where there are many pirates. The only thing that is being done by government is the prosecution of anyone who commits an act of piracy. I do not agree with this as in my opinion the root of the problem should be first addressed before the secondary one can be overcome. For example the root of the problem of piracy in Somalia would be the lack of government so that should be solved first however nothing is done to solve it. This eventually led to the depletion of fish around the area that forced fishermen to look for other means to survive in the already economically unstable country. They believe that the true criminals are in fact those that depleted their natural resources and polluted it. When attempting to loot a merchant vessel they would go close enough to use grappling hook and board the ship looting and killing everyone aboard, they would then either bury the treasure or bring it back to their strongholds where the loot will be split among them with the captain dividing the loot up evenly while he took a larger share, for other vessels such as fishing or navy vessels they would either attempt to outrun them or ram them with their reinforced hulls sinking ships. Later pirates also used cannons to disable ships for easier plunder. Many of the crew would carry weapons such as swords or guns to fight. 4.2 Methods used by pirates in the modern age Modern day pirates similar to their older counterparts make use of small speed boats to chase after merchant vessels heavily armed with modern day semi-automatic weapons they would then board the ship and capture the crew as hostage for a ransom that the shipping company will have to pay in order to get the goods, ship and crew back to continue the journey. The money compiles from mainly ransom collected by pirates and also belongings of the crew member. 5.1 Current methods to prevent piracy The methods currently used at sea are the patrolling of coast guards around straits that provide a false sense of security to vessels as these coast guards are not able to escort every ship in and out of their country hence piracy occurs quite frequently at places with little or no coast guards where the guards will be out of site or have just past the area. Ships are also equipped with radar so it is up to the crew members to defend themselves from pirates as regularly checking the radar will help them avoid areas where unknown vessels are in the area. However the few steps that are being taken by shipping companies include the rerouting of routes around areas that have a high rate of being attacked by pirates, routing their ships to follow a safer path by staying close to coast guard patrol routes and also helping their crew prepare against pirate attacks or they could also completely avoid these areas. 5.4 Steps that should be taken in my opinion Firstly the main problem that is causing people to becoming pirates should be addressed, for example the lack of a government in Somalia could be said to be the main problem in the high pirate population in the country. Hence the United Nations ought to seek away to solve it for example colonizing it to a country with more economic stability or take some responsibility and help to lead the country out of poverty. Government of countries close to Somalia should also take action and ensure that their fishing vessels do not illegally enter into Somalia to fish, allowing Somalis to return to their way of life. 6.
